Vladimir Guerrero signs minor-league contract with Blue Jays

TORONTO, Ont. – He started his career in Canada, and now it appears big-swinging outfielder Vladimir Guerrero has the chance to end his career here as well.

The Blue Jays have signed Guerrero, 37, to a $1.3 million contract, pro-rated for his time in the major leagues.

It’s not clear what position or role Guerrero would have with the team, should he make it to the big-league roster, but the former MVP is a well-respected hitter who could likely contribute as a middle-of-the-order threat.

With current designed hitter Edwin Encarnacion a capable option at first base, it’s possible Guerrero could start at designated hitter when facing left-handed pitching.

Guerrero is a career .318 hitter with 449 home runs. He hit .290 with 13 homers and 63 RBIs as a designated hitter with the Baltimore Orioles last season.

Guerrero will begin his stint with the Jays by heading directly to extended spring training in Dunedin, Florida.
