Kassandra Kaulius remembered in Surrey

SURREY(NEWS1130) -Sullivan Park in Surrey was the gathering place for people remembering Kassandra Kaulius.

She was the top-level baseball player killed by a suspected drunk driver a year ago.

Kaulius was also a popular assistant coach for a teen girls’ softball team, and many of those players came to light a candle in her memory.

Head coach Kelly Uyeno says Kaulius has a special place in their pre-game ritual.

“They take five minutes before every game, they huddle up and they say a few prayers. They talk about things they’re going to work on and things they learned from Cassandra, and they have a big cheer,” he says.

Kassandra’s mom Markita says she was moved by the number of people at the vigil, a full year after kassandra’s death.

“I saw people that I haven’t seen since Kassandra was in kindergarten. Her Grade 4 teacher came. I met the tow truck driver that towed Kassandra’s car that night. I have police officers here, and parents whose kids went to school with Kassandra

Natasha Leigh Warren, 34, has recently been charged with impaired driving causing death in the crash.  She appears in court later this month.

The Kaulius family continues to push to have impaired driving causing death recognized as vehicular manslaughter. They’ve set up Families for Justice to collect signatures on a petition.
