Vigil to remember Kassandra Kaulius

SURREY (NEWS1130) – It’s been one year since a young Surrey softball player was killed by a suspected drunk driver. Kassandra Kaulius’ family has plans to honour and remember her today.

A van slammed into Kaulius’ car at 152nd Street and 64th Avenue in Surrey, killing the 22-year-old on May 3rd, 2011. Her mom, Markita says starting at 8 p.m., a candlelight vigil at the nearby Sullivan Hall will help people mark the anniversary.

“We don’t want forget Kassandra because she was such a special girl; and I know that many won’t. But this was a preventable death and I think as a community, people are still trying to heal,” she explains.

Kassadra’s mother says the death was felt by many, including the tow truck driver who pulled Kassandra’s car from the scene. He recently emailed the family.

“He’d been doing the job for many, many years, but this really hit home for him. He has not forgotten her, or our family, [and he] asked if he could come to the vigil,” says Kaulius. “We were so touched by that, and I feel so bad for these first responders that have to go and pick up the pieces,”

Natasha Leigh Warren, 34, has recently been charged with impaired driving causing death in the crash. The Kaulius family wants tougher sentences for drunk drivers who kill. The family also plans to have petitions available to sign at the vigil.

At 9 a.m., a special service will be held for Kassandra at Precious Blood Church in Cloverdale.
