Residents rally against use of locomotives on Pearson rail link near their homes

Dozens of West Toronto residents came together and rallied against the use of diesel locomotives close to their homes.

The group opposes the use of diesel trains along the proposed rail link between Pearson International Airport and Union Station.

They rallied at a festival in a park adjoining the tracks on West Toronto railpath, north of the Bloor Go Station.

The NDP’s urban transportation critic Jonah Shein said the main concern is for the health of those who live near the tracks.

“When we take the subway in the city it’s an electric subway it’s not a diesel subway, there are 300,000 people that live alone the railpath here who’s health will be at risk, we have the opportunity to build transit that is electric,” Shein said.

The provincial government is hoping to complete the air-rail link by the start of the 2015 Pan Am Games.
