NDP pushing for federal money to improve transit

The federal NDP is holding small rallies across the country Friday calling on the government to create a national transit strategy.

Toronto NDP MP Olivia Chow has a bill in second reading that calls for a penny from the 10-cent-per-litre gas tax to be dedicated to transit funding.

Chow said federal funding is needed to build improved transit.

“Which means, for Toronto, predictable, long-term funding to make sure there is proper investment to TTC and GO trains,” Chow explained.

The funding, Chow said, shouldn’t be politically-motivated.

“Right now it’s on and off. If it’s an election year, it’s on. If it’s not election year, it’s off,” Chow said.”That’s why cities from coast to coast to coast, is saying you can’t just be piecemeal.”

The NDP held similar transit strategy rallies in Montreal, Quebec City, Calgary and Vancouver Friday.
