TTC to look at proposals allowing riders to use cellphones underground

TTC chair Karen Stintz has announced the TTC will be looking at proposals to allow riders to use their cellphones underground.

Speaking at the Economic Club on Thursday, Stintz said to improve customer experience the first step is to be able to use smart phones in all subway stations.

“For any of you who say that you didn’t get the email because you were on the subway, that will soon be a thing of the past,” she said.

Stintz said a calls will go out next week to companies interested in installing cell service.

The TTC chair said that she has also planned that by 2014, all subway stations would have information boards advising of delays posted outside, so commuters know about delays before heading in and paying their fare.

Another bonus for commuters will be modernized and cleaner stations, Stintz said, including improved washrooms.

Stintz also touched on the recent council fight over the future of transit expansion, suggesting that in the end it was positive.

“Under Mayor Ford we’ve had that full discussion. While the result was one, in fairness, he may not have preferred, people were engaged in a meaningful way,” she explained.

Stintz also says Metrolinx needs to put a system in place to prevent transit plans decided by one council from being derailed by another.
