Double lung transplant recipient suffers complications

TORONTO, Ont. – Double lung transplant recipient Helene Campbell is back on a ventilator after she began to have difficulty breathing earlier this week.

Her mother Manon announced that the tubes, originally removed on the weekend, had been re-inserted.

Campbell, who turned 21 on Wednesday, is also being treated with extra doses of steroids to stave off any signs of organ rejection – a common phenomenon with transplant patients.

She is also taking antibiotics for a lung infection and has undergone a tracheotomy, which consists of a surgical hole in her throat from which a tube will be inserted and connected to the ventilator.

Earlier Wednesday, Campbell tweeted  “21 yrs ago I breathed for the fist time, today I breathe for a 2nd beginning – a true miracle.”
