ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A new monument to mark the exact moment Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope is being celebrated, Thursday, 32 years to do the day Fox began his run in support of cancer research.
Members of his family, including his brother and father, are in attendance for the dedication.
Funded by Ottawa and the city of St. John’s, the monument was built near a much smaller tribute that many visitors had trouble finding, overlooking the North Atlantic where Fox kicked off his 1980 marathon by dipping his artificial leg into the water.
Fox’s run was cut short when his cancer returned. He died in 1981.
