Toronto police crack down on traffic congestion in downtown core

TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto police are taking aim at congestion in the downtown Toronto by launching a traffic blitz targeting drivers who block intersections and stop or park illegally.

Operation Congestion Relief will start at 3 p.m. Wednesday, and will end on Friday.

The blitz will be targeting busy intersections like University Avenue and Front Street West, where the traffic blitz will be launched from.

Police will also watch for motorists who are using their handheld communication devices.

Police also advise pedestrians and motorists to obey the rules of the road.

Drivers are prohibited from entering an intersection at a green light if there is no room for them to clear the intersection. Failing to clear a signalled intersection could face a $40 fine.
