Harper prefers subways to LRTs, streetcars

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is weighing in on Toronto’s transit debate and he’s on side with mayor Rob Ford’s subway vision.

But he’s not promising any federal cash to help pay for it.

While on a visit to Toronto, Harper said if if forced to choose, he’s on the side of the subway.

“As a one-time commuter in this city, someone who grew up here, someone who spent a lot of time here on business in recent years, I prefer, when I use transit to go underground, unimpeded,” Harper said.

The PM’s subway support comes at a perfect time for Ford ahead of a critical March 21 vote on the Sheppard line.

“I encourage taxpayers, the residents, to call their councillors,” Ford said.

And while Harper isn’t committing any more cash for Ford’s subway dream, the mayor is convinced if the city starts building underground, the money will come.
