Budget spending cuts expected sooner than later: Expert

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – You will soon find out what the province plans to do with your money over the next year.  BC Finance Minister Kevin Falcon is expected to keep spending under control when he announces the budget tomorrow in Victoria.

He’s hoping to balance the province’s books by 2013-2014; a goal that some observers say is still within reach.

“I think for the most part their timeline has a fair chance of being achieved as long as we don’t see any other nasty surprises on the global economic scene,” says Central 1 Credit Union Chief Economist Helmut Pastrick.

He adds any new spending seems unlikely and Victoria will need to walk a fine-line between fiscal and political considerations.  “A budget is an important fiscal document but it’s also a political document with an election about one year away there may be some measures contained in a budget that will play to that.”

If there are any cuts to be made, pundits say we should expect them tomorrow, as this time next year Premier Christy Clark and the provincial Liberals will be actively trying to get your vote.

News1130 will have full coverage of the budget on Tuesday as our reporter Dan Burritt will be in Victoria to bring you the very latest details and how they’ll affect your bottomline.
