VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – On the same day Vancouver Police announced they’re recommending more charges against Stanley Cup rioters, they also appealed to the public for help in finding the person responsible for assaulting an officer that night.
Constable Mike Laurin was hit on the head with a brick while outside the SportChek on Howe Street. He had 14 stitches, a concussion and was unable to work for three months (video footage below).
“I know there is somebody out there who can tell us who did this. They may have been standing next to the person who threw [the brick], they may know the person who threw it, they may have heard somebody brag about who threw it. I’d ask that they contact us at (604) 717-9999.”
The VPD have also recommended another 70 charges against 25 new Stanley Cup Riot suspects.
Inspector Les Yeo says this is the fourth round of charges forwarded to Crown Counsel, bringing the total to 350 recommendations against 125 suspects. “All of those, that we’re recommending charges against now, either destroyed property, looted businesses, started fires or assaulted an innocent by-stander.”
So far, the Crown has approved charges against 47 people who have offences ranging from participating in a riot, assault and break and enter.
Police faced a lot of criticism over the slow pace of the riot investigation.
“I”m ecstatic with the progress of the investigation. It’s going as well as can be expected, with the amount of video that we had we made a promise that we would roll these charges out quickly after we processed the video, and we are doing exactly that,” says Yeo.
