WestJet considers launching regional airline

Porter Airlines could be getting some more competition. Low-cost airline WestJet is thinking about getting into the short-haul business.

WestJet is contemplating a regional airline, which would extend service to smaller communities.

The launch could be as early as 2013.

Similar to Porter, WestJet says they would use a fleet of approximately 40 smaller, turboprop aircrafts.

The company’s CEO says WestJet’s brand, balance sheet strength and low-cost structure would allow the flyer to profitably accomplish a number of goals.

WestJet currently offers scheduled service to 71 cities in North America and the Caribbean.
