Suspect dies, police officer wounded after incident at Montreal subway station

MONTREAL – A man died on Friday shortly after being shot in the upper body by a Montreal police officer at a busy downtown subway station.

The officer suffered knife wounds to the head and upper body, but they were not considered life-threatening.

Another officer was being treated for shock.

Initial reports stated both people who’d been wounded had been shot.

The incident occurred at the Bonaventure station, a major transit hub near the downtown core.

The victim is believed to be in his 20s.

Shortly before the investigation was handed over to Quebec provincial police, Montreal officers provided limited details about what happened.

“An altercation started inside Bonaventure metro station between a suspect and two police officers,” said Const. Raphael Bergeron.

“During the altercation, one of the police officers was injured by a sharp weapon, possibly a knife, to the upper body.

“The suspect was also injured and gunshots were heard inside the metro station.”

In Quebec, it is customary for a separate police force to investigate when another has been involved in an incident where there have been injuries or death.

Subway service was briefly halted before being re-established, although trains were not stopping at Bonaventure station.
