Three more Grenada police officers charged in beating death of Canadian man

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – Three more police officers in Grenada have been charged with manslaughter in the beating death of a Canadian man.

A police statement said officers Edward Gibson, Shaun Ganness and Ruddy Felix were arrested and charged Sunday in the beating death of 39-year-old Oscar Bartholomew of Toronto.

Bartholomew was visiting the eastern Caribbean country last week to see family.

Relatives have accused a group of officers of beating Bartholomew into a coma last Monday, he later died of his injuries.

They say it happened after he mistook a plainclothes female police officer for a friend and lifted her for a hug in front of a police station.

The Sunday arrests brought the number of police suspects to five. Officers Kenton Hazzard and Wendell Sylvester were charged last week.

The suspects are due to appear before a judge on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister of Grenada said last week’s beating death of Oscar Bartholomew is an unfortunate, but isolated case.

Tillman Thomas said it is not indicative of his nation’s police force.

Thomas added that people who’ve visited Grenada say it’s the Caribbean’s safest destination.
