Winter driving tips; winterizing your car

TORONTO, Ont. – We’ve already had the first snowfall of the season outside the city, and it’s only a matter of time before we get hit with snow in the city.

Seeing as Toronto averages just over 7 centimetres of snow in November, experts say now is the time to get your car winterized.

Several areas outside of the GTA were hit with their first snowfall yesterday, and it’s recommended you do your winter preparation before that first snowfall creeps up.

Before winter strikes, it’s important to get a tune-up, according to Brian Patterson, President & General Manager at the Ontario Safety League.

“Oil, fluids, brakes and be sure that you’re completely ready for the winter,” Patterson said.

You’ll also want to change from your all-season tires to winter tires, which experts say should be for everybody, even people living within the city.

“Winter tires are meant to be driven in the snow, in the slush and in the cold,” said Silvana Aceto of the CAA.

Some insurance companies will even levy a discount on your insurance if you have winter tires equipped.

Now is also a good time to get your battery checked and replace it if it’s low. It is also a good time to pack an extra winter kit including blankets, clothes and a cell phone.

“As well make sure you have extra windshield washer fluid, booster cables and a collapsible shovel,” Aceto said. “Have your battery tested, and if it’s weak replace it now before it fails on you in a snowstorm.”

For some final tips, it is important to always remember to bring an ice-scraper along and to adjust your driving to the conditions.
