CFIA recalls jalapeno peppers over salmonella contamination fear

OTTAWA – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to eat certain fresh jalapeno peppers because they may be contaminated with salmonella.
The affected peppers were imported from the United States and sold unlabelled from bulk at Safeway stores and various independent stores in Alberta, B.C, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Yukon.
They were also sold unlabelled from bulk or in 4.5 kilogram Cal Fresco brand cases at Loblaws banners, including Extra Foods, No Frills, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, Shop Easy, SuperValu, Real Canadian Superstore, Lucky Dollar and Your Independent Grocer in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
All of the affected jalapeno peppers were sold between Dec. 3, 2011, and Dec. 20, 2011, inclusively.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these peppers.
The importers are voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace.
