‘Tough Choices With Gord Martineau: Beyond Disaster’ documentary airs Sunday night on Citytv

TORONTO – For years you have invited CityNews anchor Gord Martineau into your home to report on the news from your community and around the world.

Now, Martineau has left the comfort of his studio to follow the work of GlobalMedic, a charity that usually flies-in to assist people in world disaster zones like Cambodia and Haiti.

Over the years, Martineau has followed Rahul Singh, a Toronto paramedic and founder of GlobalMedic, to some of the worst disasters in the world.

A remarkable friendship has formed between the two and Martineau has learned some lessons about the tough choices that have to be made in foreign aid.

“It really hits home and you realize how lucky you are to live in Canada,” Martineau said.

In the first hour of ‘Tough Choices With Gord Martineau: Beyond Disaster’ he shares the heartbreaking stories of Cambodia, where he meets landmine victims.

“What they can’t wait for is disaster and relief agencies that go into a disaster zone and begin assessing, rather than doing.”

Martineau said it was an eye opening experience for him and going to meet these people really puts life into perspective.

“I think that Canadian’s should give their heads a shake because there is no end to the wining when you go somewhere. There is always someone complaining about something,” said Martineau.

The veteran anchor hopes Canadians will be inspired, and at the very least, thankful after watching the documentary.

“All they have to do is spend a day or two days in a third world country and I think they will gain immediate sense of appreciation for what they have.”

The four-part documentary series starts Sunday at 10 p.m. on CityTV.
