Police release more details on “Project Marvel”

TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto police released more details of Tuesday’s cross-Canada raids, dubbed “Project Marvel,” which targeted alleged gang members.

They also displayed some of the 27 firearms and $110,000 seized in a series of raids in Toronto, Barrie and London.

Police also seized 2.75-kilograms of cocaine, 332-grams of Marijuana and 32-grams of MDMA.

In all, 396 arrests were made. List of charges and names of arrests

Police credited the community and intelligence gathering for the success of the early-morning raids.

Toronto police Supt. Dave McLeod said the work continues.

“The removal of individuals […] represents about the one stage of an intent to ensure that our communities are safe and remain safe,” Supt. McLeod said.

He also said part of that plan is to increase police presence in 23 and 31 divisions — the scene of Tuesday’s raids.

On Tuesday, police said 10 of the accused are between 14 years old and 17 years old. They can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

A number of the 60 people arrested are believed to belong to two rival gangs — known as YBK and G-Siders — that terrorized the northwest area of the city and operated out of the Jane Street and Finch Avenue West neighbourhood.

Police said the two gangs are responsible for shootings, robberies and other crimes as they battled each other for control.
