Eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 in Oshawa reopened

The tractor-trailer was hauling boxes of fruits and vegetables

All lanes of the eastbound Highway 401 in Oshawa have reopened following a tractor-trailer crash early Tuesday morning.

Police said the fire started at around 1 a.m. approaching the Albert Street overpass. The tractor-trailer was hauling boxes of fruits and vegetables.

The OPP told 680News there’s no indication of a crash preceding the truck fire. The driver was not injured in the blaze.

The fire destroyed the entire top portion of the truck’s trailer, and burned the tires off the bottom of the rig.

There were concerns the flames may have damaged the Albert Street bridge, but the Ministry of Transportation said there’s no damage to it. MTO officials still have to inspect the highway’s road bed.

A front-end loader had to be brought in to scoop up the smoldering produce and the charred wreck.
