Forbes magazine rates Maple Leafs most valuable NHL franchise

TORONTO, Ont. – It’s not whether they win or lose. Rather, it’s how they pack the seats.

Forbes magazine currently lists the Toronto Maple Leafs as the most valuable NHL franchise, at a total of $521 million.

A number of other Canadian teams made the top 20, including the Montreal Canadiens (3rd) worth $45 million, Vancouver (7th), Calgary (13th), Edmonton (15th) and Ottawa (17th).

Second place was awarded to the New York Rangers, with the team’s value topping out at $507 million.

The magazine says the average NHL team is up five per cent from one year ago, but rising player costs are cutting into profits.
