York Regional police warn residents to secure homes

TORONTO – York Regional police is reminding all York region residents, particularly residents in the City of Vaughan, to lock their homes, garages and out buildings following 37 reports of break and enter complaints to homes in the City of Vaughan.

Suspects have been gaining entry through insecure rear-sliding patio doors during hours of darkness. Several items of jewelry and hand-held electronic equipment have been stolen.

Investigators said the suspects would knock on doors to determine if anyone was home. When confronted by homeowners, these individuals would ask for directions or would ask the owner if a certain person lived in the home.

Police are reminding residents of the following crime prevention tips to avoid becoming a victim of this crime of opportunity:

  • Lock your doors and windows when leaving the house or at night before retiring for bed
  • Secure all keys and do not leave them hanging on a visible hook at entrances to your home
  • Secure all basement and ground level windows and patio doors. Use protective glass or window film
  • where possible
  • Consider installing a home security system
  • Install dead-bolt locks and self-tapping screws on all exterior doors and in patio doors and windows
  • Trim all shrubs and trees so that doors and windows are in clear view
  • Give you home the “lived-in” look, with light-activating automatic timers, motion sensors, etc.
  • Be aware of suspicious people or vehicles in your neighbourhood and call police immediately if concerned.

Anyone with information about these thefts are asked to contact the #4 District Property Crime Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7441, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-tips, leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com or text your tip to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK.
