Man dies, mother and son in hospital after serious fire in Barrie

BARRIE, Ont. – A 68-year-old man is dead, and a mother and son are in hospital with non life-threatening injuries after a stubborn house fire in Barrie.

The blaze began on the main floor of a home on Tiffin Street, east of Innisfil street, around 3 a.m. Monday morning, before spreading to the second floor and eventually the attic.

The two survivors had to be plucked from the roof of the home by fire fighters.

The deputy fire chief told CityNews this blaze is so stubborn because the flames made it to the attic of the old, wooden structure.

No cause has been determined yet, but fire officials say they will investigate the duplex to see if it was equipped with working smoke detectors.
