Some city councillors against Occupy Toronto eviction

TORONTO, Ont. – A dozen city councillors are trying to stop the eviction of the Occupy Toronto protesters by sending a letter to Mayor Rob Ford.

The councillors are asking that the mayor stop the process and delay any more action until the entire city council can weigh in on the Occupy movement at their meeting on November 29.

Councillor Gord Perks told 680News the eviction is a deficit in democracy and said that the mayor and his allies are acting alone.

Perks said he wants the rest of his peers to get a say in how the Occupy movement is dealt with.

“I want our staff to tell us what’s being done to provide housing for people who live there and may not have other housing. I want there to be a forum where the very serious issues raised by the Occupy protesters can be aired as well,” said Perks.

However, Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday said Occupy Toronto has been given enough time at St. James Park.

“They’ve been there for a whole month. I think that the neighbourhood – the businesses and the people who live there – have exercised great patience, as has the mayor and it’s time now that we’ve got to go in and do what we have to for that park,” he said.

Councillor Norm Kelly said the city needs to winterize the park and put a lid on the damage that has been done.

Holyday added that they have gone through their legal department to make sure the eviction is legal and proper.
