Vaccine to treat breast, ovarian cancer shows promise

A vaccine which prompts the body to attack tumour cells is showing promise in a small study of advanced breast and ovarian cancer patients, leading to improved overall survival times and stopping the disease for a number of breast cancer patients.

Researchers report the Panvac vaccine, which was administered to 26 women through monthly shots, helped the body’s immune system recognize proteins produced specifically by cancer cells.

The study has been published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.
