Air Canada and flight attendants union get arbitrator’s ruling

The union representing Air Canada’s flight attendants said it has an arbitrator’s decision on a new collective agreement with the airline.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board has endorsed Air Canada’s position that the provisions in the tentative agreement be imposed without change.

More than 65 per cent of Air Canada’s flight attendants who voted rejected the original agreement, even though it had been unanimously recommended by the union’s bargaining committee.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees said Air Canada’s 6,800 flight attendants deserve better treatment from the airline and the federal government.

The CUPE national president Paul Moist said the government’s interference in collective bargaining tipped the scales in favour of Air Canada.

A threatened strike was averted at the last minute when the labour minister referred the dispute to the Industrial Relations Board.
