Canadian soldier among 13 dead in Kabul suicide bombing

KABUL, Afgan. – A Canadian soldier is among the 13 NATO troops dead, after a Taliban suicide bomber rammed his vehicle into an armoured NATO bus in Kabul, Afghanistan.

A senior Canadian military official told the Canadian Press the attack killed a total of 13 NATO troops and four Afghans.

The Defence Department has notified the family of the soldier, but they have not yet authorized the release of the name.

The attack occurred along a busy route through the Afghan capital. ABC’s Martha Raddatz said it appears the bus was specifically targeted.

“The suicide bomber was probably waiting for that bus to pass. This is a regular bus route carrying U.S. forces and U.S. civilians, back and forth from various areas in Kabul,” said Raddatz

Initial reports indicated all of the NATO troops were American, but a senior Canadian military official told the Canadian Press that wasn’t the case.

The death is the first since Canadian combat operations ended earlier this year, and the new training mission began.

It is the single deadliest attack in Afghanistan since a U.S. military helicopter crash in August that killed 38 people.
