Occupy Vancouver costs city half a million dollars so far

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver police spent about $450,000 on the Occupy Vancouver protest this past weekend.

Mayor Gregor Robertson says it’s too early to say if that will push the VPD into the red for their annual budget.

Robertson says if the VPD does go over budget, the money will come out of a contingency fund.

“It depends on the next couple of months of expenses. They’ve managed to have six budgets in a row in the black. They track their numbers very closely, but this has been an extraordinary year for big events and protests.”

Robertson says as long as the protest stays peaceful there won’t be any added costs for Vancouver police moving forward.

He says the protestors have a right to stay in downtown Vancouver as long as they keep the peace.
