Toronto Zoo could become part of Parks Canada

TORONTO, Ont. – The cash-strapped city is looking to Ottawa for help with the Toronto Zoo.

Talks are underway to create a not-for-profit type of agreement between the city and Parks Canada, so that the federal government can take over the zoo.

680News has learned the zoo could become the jewel in the future Rouge National Urban Park.

“The zoo would like it to be, especially now that the City of Toronto has suggested that we find partners for the zoo to run it for us,” former chair Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti said.

“This just sits right in, and the federal government can very quickly come to the table and take it over, along with the Rouge Valley.”

The green space, where the Toronto Zoo is located, was designated by Ottawa in the spring as a national park, a process that could take up to two years.
