Montreal MP Thomas Mulcair finally announces NDP leadership bid

MONTREAL – Thomas Mulcair has officially joined the NDP leadership race – and his campaign website is already up and running.

The English-language home page to the site says he’s the best person to take on Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The French-language home page talks about how closely he worked with Jack Layton to build the party in Quebec.

At his leadership launch, he’s seeking to emphasize his ability to grow the party across the country: Mulcair is flanked by a prominent party member from the West, former Saskatchewan MP Lorne Nystrom, and from the East, New Brunswick NDP Leader Dominic Cardy.

A pugnacious partisan and key player in the party’s dramatic rise in Quebec, Mulcair becomes the sixth candidate to enter the race.

He may be among the only ones who actually pose a threat to perceived front-runner Brian Topp.

A fluently bilingual lawyer, university professor and provincial civil servant, Mulcair boasts a string of political victories dating back to 1994.
