Daily Bread Food Bank looking for help during fall food drive

TORONTO, Ont. – For many people across the city the holiday long weekend means a big Thanksgiving meal featuring all the fancy trimmings.

For thousands of people in the GTA who don’t have enough food to eat, however, it’s a very different story.

The Daily Bread Food Bank’s fall food drive is underway, and organizers say they are relying on the drive to make sure people have enough to eat in the coming months.

Gail Nyberg, Executive Director for the Daily Bread Food Bank, says many of the people relying on food banks are those have who lost their jobs, are still unemployed or are under-employed.

“It’s so important that as a community we stick together, and help all members of our community make sure they’re fighting hunger,” Nyberg said.

There are approximately 73,000 visits to the Daily Bread Food Bank and its agencies every month, and more than a third of those relying on it are children.

“It is people just like you and me, people who have come on hard times, and what they need is a hand up to help,” Nyberg said.

The food bank is hoping to raise $400,000 and 400,000 lbs of food, but they say, unfortunately, with less than a week to go they are not even half-way to their goal.
