A woman in her 40s was shot in North York after police were called to a home in the Yonge Street and Cummer Avenue area, Friday

TORONTO, Ont. – A 52-year-old woman was shot and killed by police at a home in North York, Friday.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating.

The SIU said Silvia Klibingaitis was killed in an incident with police at her home on Wedgewood Drive, located in the Yonge Street and Cummer Avenue area.

The police watchdog said a “police firearm was discharged at least once.”

Police were called to the home at around 9:30 a.m. after reports of a person armed with a knife.

“Police arrived on scene, as a result, a woman has been taken to hospital with injuries, and police are investigating,” Toronto police Const. Tony Vella told 680News.

It is believed the woman was just outside her home when the shooting took place.

She was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Those who live in the area told 680News they are shocked by what has happened and that the neighbourhood is normally peaceful and quiet.
