Hudak wants to end ‘war on cars,’ pledges to construct Niagara highway

DUNDAS, Ont. – Ontario’s Progressive Conservative leader says he wants to end Premier Dalton McGuinty’s “war on cars,” borrowing a phrase from Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s successful election campaign.

Tim Hudak is spending Saturday in the Hamilton and Niagara areas, where he says if elected premier he will make sure a highway is constructed through the region.

There is some opposition to the project from local residents, who worry the highway would negatively impact environmentally sensitive areas.

While walking down the street in Dundas, Ont., Hudak was met by a woman with a local group opposing the project and she told him it would be a waste of money and isn’t needed for the area.

When asked about it later, Hudak said there are some people who don’t want to build highways in the province, but he’s not one of them.

He says the highway which would link Niagara to the Hamilton-Burlington area and beyond would not only create jobs, but help to ease gridlock for families, who he says are stuck in their cars and not home with their kids.

The Liberals shelved plans for a mid-peninsula highway last year after a Ministry of Transportation study said the four-lane expressway wouldn’t be needed for at least another 20 years.
