Man sentenced to 12 years in fatal 2001 Danforth fire

A Toronto businessman who hired men to torch his Danforth Avenue building supply store has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

TheStar.com reported John Magno, 53, showed no emotion as the judge condemned him for compromising the safety of residents in the densely populated neighbourhood.

In June, Magno was found not guilty of second-degree murder but guilty of manslaughter and three counts of arson.

The explosion and six-alarm fire at Woodbine Building Supply, on Danforth just west of Woodbine Avenue, happened Christmas Day 2001.

An arsonist was killed after fumes from the gasoline he was pouring ignited prematurely. Another co-plotter was badly burned.
