Ford team abandons Port Lands plans: reports

TORONTO, Ont. – The Ford brothers have reportedly backed down from a waterfront takeover in the face of fierce opposition to the idea of a glitzy development on the Port Lands.

The compromised deal will reportedly go before council on Wednesday, and would keep Waterfront Toronto in charge of the Port Lands.

The Toronto Star reported the deal will encourage Waterfront Toronto to move faster on the development of condominiums and retail space.

When Mayor Rob Ford and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, revealed plans for the waterfront area on Sept. 6, many people — from professional planners to city councillors — voiced their disapproval.

The plans included a marina, a Ferris wheel, a shopping zone and a sports centre.

Former Toronto chief city planner Paul Bedford called the plans “reckless” and “deeply flawed.”
