Search continues after empty boat found in Lake Ontario

TORONTO, Ont. – A search and rescue operation is continuing in the Ashbridges Bay area this afternoon, with Durham police and aircraft from the CFB Trenton Search and Rescue team scouring the waters.

The incident and resulting search began after an empty 16-foot boat was found floating in the waters of Lake Ontario around 4 p.m. Friday.

Capt. Jean Hood, a spokesperson for CFB Trenton, said the boat ID markings led to the name of the owner of a parked vehicle, and subsequently to the name of the boats owner.

“We do have the boat, we’re looking for basically a person in the water, whether or not they’re wearing a life-vest,” Hood said.

He said officials have been in contact with the family, but tells 680News they don’t have any solid information as to how many people may have been on the boat, but he says they do know there was just one life jacket on-board.

Five surface vessels are in the search while a Hercules and Griffin helicopter from CFB Trenton are scanning waters between Ashbridges Bay and the Toronto Islands.
