Independent group to do remote Amber Alert search

SPARWOOD (NEWS1130) – Hundreds of searchers will be combing through Sparwood and surrounding areas today in hopes of finding three-year-old Kienan Hebert, the subject of an Amber Alert. One woman originally from a nearby town is organizing her own search of more remote areas.

Despite several tips there’s still no sign of the Sparwood boy or Randall Hopley, who is accused of abducting him from his home after being put to bed Tuesday night.

In the past few days up to 500 people have been involved in the daily searches for Hebert, who was last seen wearing a pair of Scooby-Doo boxer shorts.

Sarah Gasparetto is from a town near Sparwood but now lives in Calgary, she and a friend have organized a smaller search party which will leave the Fort MacLeod A&W restaurant at 9 a.m. today.

With an intimate knowledge of the area she says the goal is simply to get into areas the main search party may not be able to reach. “Growing up there gave us a perspective on all the little nooks and crannies that are hidden in the valley,” she says. “There’s a lot of hidden valleys and regions that a lot of hikers or people going camping or hunting specifically use. It’s usually only known within the locals who have lived there for awhile.”

Gasparetto now lives in Calgary and says it’s been hard to watch this story unfolding from another province, and that’s why she wants to help. “It’s been really hard. It’s stressful and you just want to be there and help people and hold people, and so it’s definitely been very taxing.”

She says anyone who wants to be involved in the search should prepare to be outside in rugged terrain for a few hours. She expects some people from the smaller party to join the bigger search later in the day,
