Police break up sophisticated car insurance fraud scheme

TORONTO, Ont. – Investigators from the Peel Regional Police force say they’ve broken up a sophisticated fraud scheme involving staged car crashes, bogus insurance claims and even one of their own officers.

The six month investigation focused on three Brampton area rehabilitation clinics, where police allege multiple people went for treatment after the phoney crashes.

Police allege $2 million was paid out in fraudulent medical insurance claims during the duration of the scam.

Three Brampton men are now facing a string of charges including fraud and conspiracy, and police are searching for a fourth suspect.

A Peel police officer with 18 years experience on the job was also charged with obstruction of justice and breach of trust in the case back in April.
