Storm system leaves damage, power outages across GTA

TORONTO, Ont. – The same severe weather system that devastated Goderich also left thousands of people without power in the Greater Toronto Area.

One of the hardest hit sections of the city appeared to be the Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue area, where at least two houses were struck by trees.

Branches and limbs were scattered around the streets in that area, as heavy rain and winds whipped through.

“There’s a lot of trees in the neighbourhood, they’re all down,” one woman said.

One homeowner at 113 Fairlawn Avenue was in for a shock when the tree on his front lawn ended up collapsing onto his home-front.

“The whole house just shook, and I was like, ‘what was that?'” the homeowner said.

Minor road flooding was reported, such as in the Hwy. 401 and Yorkdale Road area, and as many as 10,000 people were without power at the peak of the incident.

The storm began Sunday afternoon around 3:00 p.m., bringing gusts of wind up to 100 km/h and more than 40 millimetres of rain.

Hydro One crews were working throughout the night Sunday to restore all the power and to restore the downed lines.
