One dead as tornado hits southwestern Ontario causing severe damage

GODERICH, Ont. – Ontario Provincial Police are confirming that one person is dead after a powerful tornado struck Goderich, Ont. on Sunday.
    
Police say Norman Laberge, 61, of Lucknow, Ont. was working in a salt mine in Goderich when the storm hit.
    
Police aren’t giving any further details of the circumstances of the death.
    
Environment Canada says one of its damage survey teams looked at the devastation in the southwestern Ontario town and concluded it was caused by a tornado.
    
The agency says the twister was packing winds of up to 250 km/h.
    
Images show downed power lines, trees and debris strewn across streets, while witnesses have described cars being picked up and thrown like toys.
    
Police said there are reports of multiple injuries, but exact numbers have not been determined.
