Strike deadline approaching for college support workers

TORONTO, Ont. – More than eight-thousand support workers at colleges across the province could walk off the job September 1.

The Ontario Public Service Union says that if a new collective agreement is not reached by the deadline, the start of school could be in jeopardy.

OPSEU has been in talks with management since June.

Union officials say based on the limited progress made to date, they are not optimistic a strike will be avoided.

The union is against proposals for two-tier employment and what they call the college’s erosion of good full time jobs.

Both sides will return to the bargaining table on August 23.
