Should it be illegal for drivers to come too close to cyclists?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Drivers and cyclists don’t always see eye to eye. Separating them like we have in downtown Vancouver has its pros and cons.

Now, the NDP in Ontario wants to go even further, with a proposal that would force drivers to keep their distance. The party wants to make it illegal for drivers to come within a metre of cyclists and punish those who do with a fine.

We spoke with one Vancouver woman who isn’t sure it’s practical for drivers here. “I guess if it’s in the same lane… How big is the lane? It’s not big enough, is it? There’s not enough space for it all.”

The leader of Ontario’s NDP tells the National Post it’s been done in Nova Scotia, where police say drivers are more courteous. She also says she’d have the rule apply to all roads — including those in Toronto, where there are already bike lanes.
