Fireworks a boost for weather dependent West End businesses

VANCOUVER  (NEWS1130) – The fireworks are providing some relief for West End businesses, whose customer numbers have been off, thanks to cool summer weather. It has been a lacklustre season for ice cream shops and patio restaurants.

“The weather has been pretty bad, and so the amount of customers has been very much reflected in the weather,” admits Camille Lazcano with the Marble Slab Creamery on Denman.

Travis Redpath with The Calling Public House pub says that means the fireworks have taken on added importance, to bring in the customers.

“It has brought a tonne of business into the area. The fireworks are incredible for business. We’d be busy, but not as busy without fireworks.

But that temporary boost may not be enough to entirely make up for a bad early summer.

Lazcano says while the fireworks may increase sales for a few nights, they need great weather from now on to compensate for a lousy early summer.

“We have to make up for the whole year, because in the winter our business is pretty slow. We depend on having a busy summer.”

The final Celebration of Light show is on Saturday.
