Small businesses damaged in riot getting some financial help

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Many were barricaded inside or had to put their personal safety at risk to protect their livelihood. Now, some small Vancouver businesses damaged during the Stanley Cup Riot are getting some help from the Vancouver Restoration Fund.

Father Glenn Dion says the Holy Rosary Cathedral also had bad damage done to the church hall windows. “We’re just so happy that the cathedral windows themselves didn’t get targeted… we rely on people’s generosity day by day, week by week.”

Francesco Caligiuri at the Da Gino Ristorante says he and his family felt very alone the night his windows were smashed and he was barricaded inside. “To see… all the support, it’s a nice turnaround. It started from the next day on, so we’re very thankful for everything that’s happened thereafter.”

He says the money means family-run businesses like his are not alone, and the community is united to help.

Several companies have stepped up with $20,000, which will be going towards nine businesses to help cover some of their insurance deductibles paid out of pocket.
