Dry days of summer; little rain so far

TORONTO, Ont. – After a wet and cool spring, the summer has turned sizzling and dry.

It’s been three weeks since the region has seen any significant rainfall.

So far, only four millimetres of rain fell in July — the average is 74.4 millimetres. July is usually the third wettest month.

The last significant rainfall was on June 23, with 21 millimetres of rain.

The forecast calls for a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday.

In London, Ont., a tree-watering alert has been issued. Residents have been asked to water all trees on their property to prevent them from drying out and dying.

“Your lawn needs one inch of water per week for survival, so if Mother Nature is not providing that, then that’s what we need to do,” Citytv’s weather specialist Frank Ferragine told 680News.

York Region urged its residents to be “water-smart” during hot, dry weather, and that over-watering can do more harm. It also reminded its residents to water in the evening when there is less chance of evaporation.
