City councillors want provincial funding commitment for TTC

TORONTO, Ont. – Queen’s Park shouldn’t be getting a free ride when it comes to funding the TTC, according to two Toronto city councillors.

The Toronto Sun reports Raymond Cho and Shelley Carroll hope to make transit funding an issue in the fall provincial election, wanting city council to demand all Ontario political parties commit to funding 50 per cent of the cost of running Toronto’s public transit system.

The motion is being supported by Transit Commission Chair Karen Stintz.

From the 1970’s to the 1990’s, the province paid for half the operating costs, and 75 per cent of the TTC’s capital costs.

Currently transit fares cover 84 per cent of running costs.
