Toronto police officer charged in connection with G20 arrest

TORONTO, Ont. – A Toronto police officer has been charged with a criminal offence in connection with the arrest and beating of a man during last summer’s G20 summit.

Constable Glenn Weddell, of 11 division, was charged Friday afternoon with assault causing bodily harm.

The charges stem from the allegedly violent arrest of Dorian Barton, who was arrested during a summit protest on June 26, 2010.

This is the third investigation into Barton’s beating by the Special Investigation Unit, which is Ontario’s police watchdog. In previous investigations no charges were pressed as the SIU was unable to positively identify the officer involved.

However, because of new evidence obtained by the SIU, a new investigation was opened.

“As a result of information provided by the TPS after May 26, 2011, the SIU conducted three further interviews of TPS members,” SIU Director Ian Scott said. “On the basis of information received in those interviews, and in conjunction with information gathered in the prior investigations, there are now reasonable grounds to believe that Toronto Police Constable Glenn Weddell committed the offence of assault causing bodily harm against Dorian Barton on June 26, 2010.”

Constable Weddell is scheduled to appear at the College Park courthouse on July 21.
