TTC may derail jobs to cope with budget shortfall

TORONTO – Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Chair Karen Stintz said she wants to cut costs within the transit system before hitting riders with another fare hike.

Cutting staff could be among the options, but TTC union boss Bob Kinnear said laying off workers only erodes service already stretched to the limit.

He said the union could find millions in savings if the TTC chair was willing to sit down with him.

“But that entails the commissioners being receptive to consulting with the front line employees,” Kinnear said.

A jump in ridership and soaring fuel prices are expected to put the TTC in a deep budget hole of $71 million next year, resulting in a $39 million deficit for the transit system.
