TORONTO – Environment Canada has issued a humidex advisory for the GTA and much of southwestern Ontario, while a smog alert is in effect for a number of areas surrounding the Toronto area.
Environment Canada is warning of humidex values above 40 by late-day Tuesday. These values which are expected to continue into Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a smog advisory issued by the Ontario Environment Ministry is in place for Elgin, Sarnia-Lambton and Windsor-Essex-Chatham-Kent areas, where temperatures are forecast to hit the 30 C range Tuesday.
The air quality index is expected to exceed the poor threshold of 50, due to ground level ozone and fine particulate.
People are encouraged to “spare the air” by taking public transit or car pooling, while officials recommend avoiding vehicle exhaust fumes and strenuous exercise.
People should consult a doctor about specific health concerns.
Cooler, fresher air is expected to come in with a cold front on Thursday.
