Extra radiation lowers risk of breast cancer recurrence

Early stage breast cancer patients who receive an extra dose of radiation have a higher chance of completing remission, new studies from McMaster University show.

This means that if the lymph nodes and breast tissue receive powerful radiation early enough, then they are 35 per cent less likely to see the cancer return within the next five years.

McMaster is taking their findings to the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago Monday.

The Canadian Cancer Society is excited about the research, saying it will change treatments for roughly 2,500 people a year with early stage breast cancer.
